First Step

First Step is a non-profit organization that has provided a wide range of services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Wayne County since 1978. Though they initially started as just one short term shelter, First Step now has a presence in over 35 communities with services including housing, legal advice, support groups, community education, and children’s advocacy and prevention programs. Items such as food, clothing, household goods, and other basic needs of survivors in transition are provided, as well. First Step is also known for their 24-hour help line which provides crisis intervention and support, and their assault response team, which is on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Since adopting First Step as their local philanthropy in 2019, the Phi Sigma Chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi has been able to host several small fundraising and philanthropy events and is hoping to establish an annual fundraising event within the next year.
